As our doctors always tell us, regular exercise is essential to good health. For some of us, that may mean visiting the gym, taking a yoga class or running on a treadmill. For others, finding the time and means to exercise may be a bit more difficult. Gym memberships and exercise equipment can be expensive, and attending classes requires a specific time commitment and reliable transportation, so what’s a person to do? Well, how about hopping on a bike?

Cycling is one of the easiest, most low-impact forms of exercise. It’s inexpensive – particularly if you live in a community with a bike share program, it doesn’t require driving to a gym, there are no membership fees, and you determine the time, duration and pace of your ride. Most urban and suburban areas have bike trails that you can take advantage of, or you can just ride around your neighborhood if you’d like. Tired of your routine? Change your route! You’ll experience something new every time. One of the wonderful benefits of cycling is that it’s all up to you!

In addition to the convenience and low cost of cycling, there are numerous benefits to our health and overall well-being. These include:

• Improvement in strength and muscle tone
• Improvement in cardio-vascular health
• Improvement in endurance and stamina
• Improvement in coordination, balance and flexibility
• Weight management and weight loss
• Stress reduction

So what are you waiting for? Grab a helmet (please), hop on a bike and get moving! Even if you haven’t been on a bike since you were a kid, you’ll pick it right up again. As the old saying goes, “It’s just like riding a bike!”
